Regulatory Affairs Officer, Canadian Nuclear Association

The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) is a non-profit organization established in 1960 to represent the nuclear industry in Canada and to promote a strong, vibrant and expanding nuclear industry benefitting members, stakeholders and all Canadians.  

Major Purpose:
The CNA is a national voice of the nuclear industry in Canada. The primary goals of the association are to earn the trust and confidence of stakeholders, Canadians and industry leaders to enable the advancement and growth of the industry.  

The CNA’s purpose is to focus and enable the dialogue on Canada’s nuclear future; to be, and to be seen to be the voice of the industry and; demonstrate member value including drawing on members to achieve goals. 

The CNA offers a range of services: regulatory and government affairs; research and policy development; advocacy to advance those interests in the political and public spheres and programs and an active communications program to support the association’s objectives.  

Formulating and communicating the CNA’s positions and creating dialogue on the industry’s contribution to Canada are central to achieving the CNA’s vision. 

General Functions:
Reporting to the Director of Regulatory Affairs, the Officer shall perform a wide range of functions in support of the Regulatory Affairs Program. 

Your primary responsibilities will be to track and report on new federal and provincial regulatory developments. You will also be instrumental in the research and development of Member positions on these and other regulatory affairs issues. 

As a supporting member of the CNA team, the Regulatory Affairs Officer will be exposed to a range of activities and events, including the CNA Annual Conference and Trade Show.  

Specific Activities:

  • Monitor new federal and provincial regulatory developments and draft regulatory briefings, positions, correspondence, etc. 
  • Assist the Director of Regulatory Affairs in coordinating Working Group, Task Force and other meetings, workshops and events. 
  • Work with other industry associations in the development and/or alignment of positions on regulatory issues.
  • Prepare materials in support of Committee, hearing and other presentations (e.g., Qs and As, speaking notes, etc.). 
  • Contribute regulatory content to CNA Web site, blog and other communications materials and coordinate translation and other tasks related to production and dissemination of Program materials. 
  • Provide other services as required by the Director of Regulatory Affairs, other Directors and CNA President. 

Education:

  • University degree in science, engineering, a related field, or an equivalent range of education and experience.  A minimum of two years of relevant experience. 

Experience:

  • Knowledge of domestic (federal and provincial) and international regulatory regimes, ideally within the nuclear industry.
  • Knowledge of the priorities and policies of the Government of Canada as they relate to federal and provincial regulatory frameworks. 
  • Experience communicating with a variety of stakeholders, ranging from members of the public, to industry and regulatory agency representatives. 
  • Experience researching and writing formal briefings, correspondence and other materials.  
  • Technical grounding in the nuclear industry, through relevant experience, or studies, would be an asset. 
  • Experience with advocacy strategies on behalf of an organization, would be an asset.

Language skills:

  • Excellent written and verbal skills in English are required. A working level of French (comprehension and speaking) is mandatory.

  • Political sensitivity to the relevant issues and institutions of the federal and provincial governments.  
  • Research and analytical skills are necessary for the development of defensible positions. 
  • Strong communication skills and superior writing ability are essential for advocating Member positions.

  • Resilience and adaptability to changing circumstances and an evolving environment.

Term and Salary:
This position is a two-year term full-time assignment with the possibility of an extension.  Salary range commensurate with experience.
