Equipment and services

An interesting but little-known fact is that the nuclear suppliers and services industry is one of only two advanced technology industries where Canada exports more than it imports. The other net exporter is the aerospace industry.

Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. has exported CANDU reactors to Argentina, China, Romania, and South Korea. These exports have supported many well-paid jobs in Canadian manufacturing and engineering companies.

nuclear employment
The Canadian nuclear industry employs 31,000 directly and indirectly and is also responsible for another 40,000 jobs for those providing equipment and services.

Canadian suppliers of nuclear equipment have developed a significant export market – for example, replacing steam generators in U.S. nuclear power plants.

Over the past decade, the export of nuclear power plants and services has earned more than $5 billion, plus a similar amount from the export of uranium concentrates. The nuclear suppliers and services industry employs about 40,000 Canadians.

Research conducted in the nuclear industry has contributed in many areas, such as improvements in materials, increased knowledge of living systems, new chemical processes, and advanced mining techniques.
