Safety in the nuclear industry

The Canadian nuclear industry is very proud of its safety record.

Public and employee safety are the top priorities of Canada’s nuclear facilities.

This begins with public safety. In more than 45 years of using nuclear energy, not one single fatality has resulted from radiation exposure at a Canadian nuclear power plant or waste storage facility.

Safety is always the number one concern. Everyone in the nuclear power industry understands that the future of the industry depends on top safety performance.

This includes the safety of nuclear workers. Canada's nuclear stations have achieved excellent workplace safety records.

The nuclear industry is one of the most strictly regulated and closely monitored industries in the world. Here in Canada, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has the sole responsibility for regulating, licensing, monitoring and inspecting all activities and facilities which use nuclear material. The CNSC is part of the federal government.
