Ontario NDP leader Andrea Horwath recently announced that if her party forms the government after the Oct. 6 provincial election, it would phase out both coal and nuclear plants. Horwath announced, "We don't think nuclear is the wisest way to go, not only because of cost, but because of risk and danger, and so we are looking at other options." She also said, "the cheapest form of power ... is conservation."
The NDP platform says if it forms government, it would place a moratorium on building new nuclear plants or refurbishing existing ones in order to redirect savings into votebuying tax rebates for home energy refits. The NDP says future decisions about nuclear will be subject to environmental assessments comparing alternative sources of energy.
Horwath's comments and her party's policy clearly illustrate the NDP does not understand the reality of energy production in Ontario.
