Refurbishing Ontario's Nuclear Fleet a Major Economic Boost: CME Report

July 14, 2010 — According to a report released today by Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME), refurbishing nuclear facilities at Bruce and Darlington will create 25,000 jobs in the next decade and inject $5 billion into the Ontario economy annually.

CNSC authorizes AECL to restart the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor at the Chalk River Laboratories

Ottawa, July 7, 2010 — Following a public hearing held on July 5, 2010, in Ottawa, Ontario, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) announced today its decision to authorize AECL to reload fuel in the NRU reactor and proceed to the restart of the reactor. The installation is located in Chalk River, Ontario.

Canada’s Nuclear Industry: A Strategy for Growth

Ottawa, June 1, 2010 — Ms. Denise Carpenter, President and CEO of the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA), today unveiled a vision for Canada’s nuclear industry to seize the opportunities being presented by a global nuclear renaissance. During a presentation to members of the Senate Standing Committee on Energy, The Environment and Natural Resources, Ms. Carpenter described key elements of a growth strategy that will ensure Canada remains a global leader in nuclear technology, creates highly-skilled jobs in Canada, increases economic benefits for Canadians, and generates clean energy to help address the domestic and international challenges of climate change. The President also reiterated the need for vocal Government support to achieve these goals.

AECL's Enhanced CANDU 6 Reactor (EC6) Achieves Important Milestone of Canadian Regulator's Pre-Project Design Review

Mississauga, April 8, 2010 — The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has completed Phase 1 of a Pre-Project Design Review of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's (AECL) Enhanced CANDU 6 reactor™ (EC6™). The conclusion is that, at an overall level, the design intent is compliant with the CNSC regulatory requirements and meets the expectations for new nuclear power plants in Canada.

Ottawa, February 18, 2010 - From February 24-26, 2010, the Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) will hold its annual Nuclear Industry Conference and Trade Show in Ottawa.  This year’s conference is particularly special as it marks a significant milestone for the CNA – celebrating 50 years of promoting the peaceful use of nuclear energy for Canadians.  The Honourable Christian Paradis, the Minister for Natural Resources Canada will kick off the event with remarks at a Welcome Reception on Wednesday, February 24th.

OPG MOVES TO PLANNING PHASE OF DARLINGTON REFURBISHMENT
Pickering B to Enter Final Decade of Operation with $300-Million Investment

Durham Region — February 16, 2010 - Today, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) announced a two-part investment strategy for its nuclear generating stations in Durham Region.

First, OPG will proceed with a detailed planning phase for the mid-life refurbishment of the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station east of Toronto, with construction expected to start in about 2016. The business decision to move forward with an investment in Darlington comes after very positive outcomes of initial studies on the plant’s condition and continued strong operating performance. The next phase of the process will include an Environmental Assessment, an Integrated Safety Review and an Integrated Improvement Plan that will define the scope, cost and schedule of the refurbishment project.

Canadian nuclear regulator finds “no fundamental barriers” to licensing AECL's Advanced CANDU Reactor (ACR-1000)
Mississauga, ON — September 10, 2009 - The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has completed Phase 2 of a Pre-Project Design Review of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited's Advanced CANDU Reactor (ACR-1000®) and concluded that there are no fundamental barriers to licensing the ACR-1000 in Canada.


CNA Regrets Delay in Nuclear Procurement in Ontario
OTTAWA, ON — June 30, 2009 - The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) is encouraged by the support for nuclear energy in the province from Ontario Energy and Infrastructure Minister George Smitherman. Like Minister Smitherman, the CNA believes that a strong electricity system in Ontario requires nuclear power to provide base load electricity in the province.

AECL Press Release - NRU Status Report
Chalk River, ON — December 12, 2008 - Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) NRU reactor was restarted on Thursday, December 11, following the completion of a maintenance outage. Today, the NRU reactor is operating at high power and the medical isotope production process has resumed.

The Canadian Nuclear Association (CNA) Commends Hydro-Québec's Decision to Refurbish Gentilly-2 Nuclear Power Plant
Ottawa, ON — August 19, 2008 - The CNA welcomes today's announcement to refurbish Gentilly-2, the 675 megawatt nuclear power plant which began operation in 1983 near Trois-Rivières on the south shore of the St. Lawrence.

Hydro-Québec will refurbish Gentilly-2 nuclear generating station
Montréal, QC — August 19, 2008 - Hydro-Québec will invest $1.9 billion to refurbish Gentilly-2 nuclear generating station in Bécancour. Refurbishing the 675-MW plant will extend its operation until about 2040, allowing Hydro-Québec to keep a reliable asset that contributes significantly to the stability of its power grid. This generating facility, in commercial operation for 25 years, has another advantage: it does not produce any greenhouse-gas emissions.
