The Chalk River facility is a site of major research and development to support and advance nuclear technology. The 2012 Chalk River Facility Tour is an opportunity for students to experience this unique facility. The Tour will be open to up to 40 students who express interest and enter the Chalk River Facility Tour video contest. Details about the contest are available to students through their university.

The purpose of this year’s Regulatory Affairs Workshop will be to share information on new regulatory developments pertaining to the protection of the environment and, in particular, the protection of water. Guest speakers will include federal and provincial regulatory officials whose mandate includes the protection of water. Dr. Patsy Thompson will be discussing proposed improvements to the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s regulatory framework for environmental protection under the Nuclear Safety and Control Act. Beverley Thorpe, of the Credit Valley, Toronto and Region and Central Lake Ontario Source Protection Committee, will be discussing new policy direction for source water protection under Ontario’s Clean Water Act. Heather McCready will be discussing how Environment Canada’s Environmental Enforcement Directorate is working to minimize threats to the natural environment under the Fisheries Act. Workshop participants will be provided with an overview of the mandate and legislation that govern these activities and the opportunity to ask questions about the new, and existing, regulatory requirements.

12:00 – 17:00 Talking about Radiation: "Are We Safe? Can We Trust You?", in Québec Room
(Working lunch to be provided)
This workshop, facilitated by Decision Partners, will provide participants with an understanding of radiation science at a lay level, and the principles of strategic risk communications for communicating about this complex topic. Understanding Risk Communications and explaining health risks associated Radiation was identified as a key learning following events at Fukushima. The workshop will enhance the preparedness of the participants – including industry workers, stakeholders and governments – in explaining types of radiation to people from outside the nuclear industry.

Workshop participants will also hear from Mr. John Roberts and Ms. Andrea Marshall from Aurora Energy Ltd., who will share a case study based on their company’s experience communicating with people in Labrador about radiation and uranium mining. Participants will leave the workshop with a toolkit of tested communications messages and a better understanding of best practices for engaging stakeholders in a community dialogue.

13:30 – 15:00 Career Development Seminar – Student Event, in Les Saisons
Senior Executives from AECL, AMEC, Bruce Power and Women-in-Nuclear Canada will share stories about their early career paths in the nuclear industry and perspectives about current employment trends and opportunities with approximately 100 university students. Following the panel, Mr. Claude D. Chapman from Ian Martin Group Ltd., will lead a CV-preparatory session for students and offer helpful, practical tips based on his popular book, “Career Transition Design.”

Join us for a special award ceremony as we honor the 2012 CNS/CNA Ian MacRae Award recipient, Mr. Gerald (Jerry) Grandey, former CEO of Cameco Corp. The Ian MacRae Award is presented to an individual who has made outstanding contributions to advancing nuclear energy in Canada. This event is part of the Welcome Reception, sponsored by Cameco and Tetra Tech, and welcomes Industry Executives, Ambassadors, Politicians, Senior Government officials, and special guests.

Dr. Terry Ruddy will discuss how a joint collaboration between the Hearth Institute and Nordion is leading to alternate isotopes for use in patient imaging and research into therapies for heart disease. Also how the Institute, in partnership with AECL, is learning more about the effects of low-dose radiation for nuclear workers and in medical applications. These are just two examples of innovation currently leading nuclear medicine to the next level.
