Why Nuclear
A single CANDU fuel bundle (about the size of a fireplace log) produces as much electricity as 380 tonnes of coal or 1,800 barrels of oil.
Making electricity from nuclear is affordable today
Nuclear power may have many benefits, but can we afford it? Here are some facts.
The price of nuclear energy tends to be stable over time, and it is very competitive with other ways of making electricity. The fuel for nuclear power is uranium. Mined in Canada, uranium is only a small part of the cost of nuclear power. Even if the price of uranium rises, it has only a small impact on the cost of nuclear power. This makes it different from electricity generated by fossil fuels, which can be more volatile in price.
Nuclear power also has the advantage of not having any carbon or air pollution emissions, minimizing environmental costs. Plus, the cost of long-term used fuel and waste management is included in the nuclear energy price, so these will not burden future generations.
Nuclear energy has proven to be affordable over the decades that it has contributed to Canada's electricity supply.
Electricity Generation in 2009

Nuclear power supplied almost 15% of Canada’s electricity in 2009, with no emissions that result in climate change or smog. |
