Waste management

Canada's nuclear industry is a Canadian leader in managing its wastes

Generating electricity from uranium results in used nuclear fuel and nuclear wastes. All of these waste products are very carefully managed. In fact, it would be difficult to name a Canadian industry that manages its waste products as stringently as does Canada's nuclear industry.

There are plans for the long term management of used nuclear fuel

There is a plan for the permanent, safe disposal of all of Canada's nuclear wastes, under the oversight of the federal government. In the meantime, every ounce of high level waste is kept in extremely secure facilities at the nuclear stations.

There are also plans for the long term management of less radioactive wastes

Waste products that are less radioactive are also managed very carefully at the nuclear sites. There is also a plan for the long-term management of these wastes.
